Big Beautiful Bill would undermine health coverage, says CBO

5 June 2025

A sweeping legislative package backed by US President Donald Trump could strip health insurance from more than 16 million Americans over the next decade, according to a new analysis from the Congressional Budget Office.

The report estimates that 10.9 million people would lose coverage under the House-approved bill, with the figure climbing to 16 million if lawmakers fail to extend pandemic-era tax credits that currently make marketplace coverage more affordable. If realized, the change would mark the largest reduction in health care coverage in US history.

The plan would cut Medicaid eligibility by enforcing stricter work requirements and verification checks, disqualifying about 8 million people from the program. It would also eliminate coverage for approximately 1.4 million immigrants without permanent legal status who are enrolled in state-funded plans.
