Mercosur countries sign agreements on disease control

22 November 2012

Mercosur Ministries of Health have recently signed seven agreements establishing integrated actions for the control and prevention of diseases, at a meeting in Brazil. Mercosur is an economic and political agreement signed in 1991 among Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The documents aim to contribute to a reduction in the number of deaths and cases of leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, dengue fever, HIV/AIDS and chronic non-communicable diseases in the region.

Brazil’s Health Minister, Alexandre Padilha, highlighted the importance of the initiatives. "The Ministries of Health of full and associate member states in the block are undertaking innovative measures to further strengthen ties in order to improve the quality of health of their populations," he said.
