Record year for commercial contract clinical research in England

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network has today released record figures for commercial contract clinical research in the National Health Service (NHS) in England.

Funded by the Department of Health, the NIHR Clinical Research Network supports the delivery of both commercial contract and non-commercial clinical research studies in the NHS in England. In its latest annual statistics, from April 2013 to March 2014, the Network reported:

recruitment of more than 25,000 patients to commercial contract studies – a 26% increase on the previous year. This means nearly 96,000 patients have participated in commercial contract studies over the last six years;
research delivery support to 533 new commercial contract studies, a 17% uplift on the previous year and the highest number since records began; and
86% of Trusts recruited patients onto NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio commercial contract studies
