The decision by Portugal to include free human papillomavirus vaccination for pre-adolescent and adolescent girls in the 2008 national vaccination calendar has been welcomed by Sanofi Pasteur MSD, which markets US drug major Merck & Co's Gardasil HPV vaccine in the European Union.
"This is great news for women in Portugal," according to Didier Hoch, president of Sanofi Pasteur MSD. He added: "this program...will help save the lives of many women... and improve the health of even more women who suffer from other human papillomavirus-related genital diseases."
Portugal's Prime Minister, Jose Socrates, told the Parliament that access to vaccination will not depend on family income. A public procurement process will be set up in December, allowing the government to choose an HPV vaccine, he added.
