Schlecker moves on German drug retailing

25 February 2008

The distribution of drug products in Germany has started to change radically, both in the wholesale and retail sector. The largest druggist chain, Schlecker, has entered the market for drugs whose distribution has traditionally been restricted to pharmacies. The initial move involves the offer of over-the-counter drugs through the Netherlands-based on-line direct mail pharmacy Vitalsana.eu. Schlecker is offering a discount of up to 45% compared with its traditional rivals. At a later stage the firm, which already has 11,000 retail outlets in Germany, says it will market prescription drugs.

Schlecker has been selling OTC drugs in its stores for over 30 years and operates five pharmacies in the neighboring Czech Republic. While products will only be marketed on-line via Vitalsana.com, it is understood the German company will later expand its operations to cover telephone, fax and mail order.
