South Africa to more than double ARV access

16 February 2009

The South African government has announced plans to increase to 1.4 million the number of people receiving antiretroviral drug treatment  over the next three years, part of a program estimated to cost about  $90.0 million. The country has the largest number of HIV/AIDS cases  worldwide, believed to stand at five million.

Trevor Manuel, the Minister of Finance, included the measures in a  budget speech to South Africa's Parliament. He said: "our [ARV] program  now covers 630,000 people and the medium-term expenditure framework  provides for an increase to 1.4 million by 2011-2012." Mr Manuel also  outlined proposals to introduce new pneumoccocal pneumonia and rotavirus  vaccines for pediatric use, the Agence France Presse reports.
