NEW YORK: equities suffered a roller-coaster week to January 14, buffeted by ongoing concerns about the mortgage crisis, its effects on banks and a forecast of a mild recession from Goldman Sachs. However, markets were lifted by hopes of an interest rate cut, following remarks by Federal Reserve Bank chairman Ben Bernanke, leaving the Dow Jones just 0.4% lower overall. A number of US biotechnology firms made upbeat presentations at the annual JP Morgan health care conference, which helped the sector index higher. Overall, of the drug stocks tracked, 30 saw a rise and nine a decline.
