Global drug giant Pfizer's Sutent (sunitinib malate) has shown a significant benefit in the treatment of pancreatic islet cell tumors, meeting all endpoints in a Phase III trial early. As a result, the trial has been halted. The news pushed shares in the firm up 10% to $14.02 on March 13.
This is the second Phase III Sutent trial Pfizer has stopped early on the recommendation of an independent data monitoring committee due to benefit. In January 2005, a Phase III study in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) was unblinded early when a planned interim analysis showed significantly-longer time to tumor progression with Sutent compared to placebo.
