SYNGIS' AX200 gets EU orphan status for ALS

German drugmaker SYNGIS Pharma AG says that the European Medicines Agency's (EMEA) Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products has recommended orphan designation for AX200, its candidate amyotrophic lateral sclerosis treatment. The drug, which is a therapeutic protein specifically developed for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, counteracts neuronal cell death, decelerating the progression of ALS.

SYNGIS said that laboratory trials had shown that AX200 helped prevent the degradation of motorneurones, leading to increased maintenance of muscular strength over time. The firm added that the drug also appears to stimulate regenerative process within these cells.
