Thailand's Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsub is allegedly putting pressure on Vichai Chokewiwat, a key supporter of the country's compulsory licensing (Marketletters passim) policy, to resign as chairman of the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation. Mr Chaiya told the Bangkok Post that "different ministers have different policies."
The GPO is responsible for importing seven HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular and cancer drugs listed under the compulsory license policy announced by the previous military-supported government. However, Mr Chaiya had already shelved plans to grab patents for the oncology products.
Dr Vichai's removal would shortly follow that of Siriwat Tiptaradol, Secretary General of Thailand's Food and Drug Administration, who, the Bangkok Post reported, has been transferred to an "inactive post as a health ministry inspector."
