US FDA to monitor Rx use by doctors

The US Food and Drug Administration looks set to start moving away from its more traditional role of approving new drugs to monitoring the way medicines are used once cleared, and will urge doctors and patients to more closely follow safety guidelines when prescribing and taking drugs, reports the Associated Press.

The FDA has advised staff of this plan, and the agency's Deputy Commissioner was due to detail its "Safe Use" program at a House of Representatives hearing, which took place after this issue went to press.
