US seniors save $7M with Walgreens' Medicare discount card

26 September 2004

Walgreens Health Initiatives has saved seniors more than $7 million in the first three months with its Medicare-approved prescription drug discount card. Savings for Medicare beneficiaries with the WHI card averaged more than 27% per prescription since the program launched June 1.

These savings do not include the $600 annual credit the federal government provides to eligible low-income Medicare beneficiaries. That credit amounted to an additional $6.4 million in savings for WHI cardholders over the last three months, says Walgreens.

Already, more than 120,000 Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in WHI's drug discount card program.
