The Governor of the US state of Virginia, Tim Kaine (Democrat), has announced a $400,000 federal grant to upgrade a prescription drug tracking database. This allows pharmacists and physicians to identify patients who make excessive prescription requests within the state, which has a significant prescription drug abuse problem, especially in the south west of the state, according to the Roanoake Times.
Among the commonly-abused drugs recorded in the Virginian database are methadone, OxyContin (oxycondone HCl), a powerful prescription pain reliever marketed by drugmaker Purdue Frederick and Abbott Laboratories' Vicodin (hydrocodone 10mg, paracetamol 1g).
