Vermont launches Rx drug price web site

22 July 2007

A web site intended to allow residents of the state of Vermont, USA, to compare prescription drug prices is a "waste of time," according to the northeastern state's Chairman of the Board of Pharmacy, Earl Pease, the Boston Globe reports.

The initiative, promoted by Vermont's Attorney General, William Sorrell (Democrat), is designed to help local residents who are faced with price variations of 30% or more in the same area.

Mr Pease argued that, with fewer than one in 20 customers paying the cash price, a comparison of prices reported by pharmacists will not take into account co-payments for insured residents or special rates that apply to private and public insurers.
