The World Health Organization's Director General, Margaret Chan, has announced a new round of changes to the global body's structure. As a result, the Health Technology and Pharmaceuticals cluster will be merged into the Health Systems and Services cluster.
The WHO's assistant director, Howard Zucker, is leaving "to pursue other opportunities," soon after the inconclusive recent Inter-Governmental Working Group meeting on innovation and intellectual property which he headed (Marketletter November 19). The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Associations and Manufacturers said the merger would "create a powerful body" under a new leader following the imminent departure of Anders Nordstrom. A spokesman for the IFPMA told the Marketletter that it awaits news of the new appointee "with interest."
