With the pharmaceutical sector increasingly operating on a global scale, supply chains for sourcing excipients are becoming more complex, and the risk of errors caused by mislabeling, contamination or substitution of one substance for another is increasing. In recognition of this situation, the International Pharmaceutical Excipients Council has responded with a proposal to create its own multi-regional body - to be called the IPEC Federation - that will provide advocacy and promote quality in excipients around the world.
For many years, the IPEC has consisted of three subdivisions - IPEC-Americas, IPEC Europe and JPEC in Japan - which are known collectively as TriPEC. The creation of IPEC China in 2008 provided an opportunity to expand the horizons of the industry group and provide a truly global platform for discussing issues relating to the quality, safety and functionality of pharmaceutical excipients used in pharmaceutical products.
